It was this particular post that got me to actually join. I am grateful to be among like minds, amazing minds. I am currently on my journey into the Yoruba Religion and Practices. I read the aforementioned post.
To Markeysha, I think research is always a good thing for any and all things so that you make informed decisions. However, I did want to add that Oshun is one of several deities and only through ceremony do know whether or not she is actually your diety/on your head. I think it is easy to glamorize certain sacred images or common ideas because it is popular. Be careful of that.
I feel confident to share this with you because I am new and initially I was so interested in just Oshun, but there is so much more to learn and experience so that you come full circle. Therefore, what put me in closer proximity of my quest/journey was research and associating with individuals in my area who are Elders in the Yoruba religion.
My I recommend the following two books?
The Handbook of Yoruba Religious Concepts by Baba Ifa Karade (I think this one would be perfect for you)
I have searched the web, book stores and I have a hard time choosing what to read and what to stay away form. The web is so untrusting at times, and books well I don’t know were to start. I have wanted to learn more and hopefully practice the ways of Oshun (hope I sad that right) can you recommend anything to me? Makeysha E.

The two books that my sister recommended are wondrous founts of information on Oshun- The Source...I have been a priestess of Oshun for the past 15 years and I would LOVE to answer any direct questions that you have...
General Oshun information....
She is the Source, the primordial waters from which all life springs, The Source is the translation of the Yoruba word Oshun
Her primary manifestation is found in Oshogbo Nigeria, and it is the river Oshun
Once our Ancestors came to the West we proclaimed her mother of all fresh waters
Her number is five
Her metal is brass
Her colors are orange, yellow, gold, sometimes accented with red and/or green, and sometimes pink
She is the owner of sensuality, sexuality, fertility, womanlyness, witchcraft (as a womanly art),beauty, marriage, ecstasy, abundance and bliss...among other things
She is the leader of the Iyaami-the Ancestral Mothers- also known as the witches, feminine forces you do NOT want to mess with
Combs, mirrors, and fans are used to represent her
Fish, peacocks, Afrikan grey parrots, and sometimes mermaids are her manifestations
BUT
this could be the beginning of a great discussion
what are some other questions you have?
How do you know you are ready?
You are asking questions and you are ready to hear the answers...that to me signifies readiness
Our oral scriptures, the odu, teach that we are not blessed alone but in groups, and that we should gather together like trees do to form a forest...anything is best done with a group of like minds and this is no exception...
I would be happy to guide you into any areas that are my expertise and give you the info of others who can help you in areas that are not my forte'
My book Ona Agbani offers very concise information on the basics, the foundation...do not take my word for it...you may speak to Sis Mawiyah and Sis Osunyoyin who have both read it, before you purchase it...it is available on my profile
Osun Across the Waters!
This is my favorite Oshun books. I also really liked John Mason's books on the Yoruba faith as well.

Mothering is an act of revolution!
Confused
I don’t know where to start!
1. How do I know that I am ready to learn the ways of Ohsun?
2. Is this a spiritually that is best practiced in a congregation, circle, alone?
3. How can I find a "guide' if this is what I wish to pursue?
Of course I have more questions but I don’t want to take up too much of you time.. I guess I am interested in the foundation, the basics.
