I want to buy a sewing machine. I don't know how to sew. I just want one to play around with and learn a little something. I'm not going into business nor do I plan to do a whole lot, but I want to be able to follow a simple pattern. Can you recommend a good beginners machine?
Thanks
Re:Help Me Buy a Sewing Machine
I always have liked Singer products....however, Brother makes a good machine as well at a less expensive price. You can generally find it at Wal-mart. The machine is less important than your skill (which will come with time and practice like anything).
I've taught many people how to sew and often they want to start with complicated patterns. Please, please, please start with something simple like a pillow. This will teach you the very basics of construction and will encourage your sense patience while you are learning. Next inline for patterns would be drawstring pants...also very simple.
When you start chosing patterns, I would suggest Simplicity, Butterick or McCall's (in that order)....stay away from Vogue if you are just starting out.
Hope this helps!

Re:Help Me Buy a Sewing Machine
Great advice from "MyMuse"!!! I also like Bernina, and I think there is another called Elna, that are really good, I guess it depends on what you want to be able to do. I am working on a very old Elna...it's time for an upgrade. You may just write don a list of things you want to be able to do and then math the prices accordingly. Let us know what you end up getting!!
