UMOJA as understood by my Blessings

Sometimes it can feel like an all out knock-down, drag-out between us and media when raising children with certain values. In our house, we practice sensitivity and understanding; inclusiveness, not boxes and labels. As such, we allow our daughters to visit various churches and religious gatherings, because we belief that Creator will reach them in a way that best fits THEM, and not necessarily the way we were reached.

Kwanzaa gives us an excellent opportunity to practice that school of thought. Each principle includes a focus on not just one's self, but one's place in and value to surrounding community.

Here's a quick example of just how well a 5 and 3 year old can grasp the concepts.

The "Real" Thanksgiving Story

Truth, in honor of my ancestors. For you and the kids...

Most of us associate the holiday with happy Pilgrims and Indians sitting down to a big feast. And that did happen - once.

The story began in 1614 when a band of English explorers sailed home to England with a ship full of Patuxet Indians bound for slavery. They left behind smallpox which virtually wiped out those who had escaped. By the time the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts Bay they found only one living Patuxet Indian, a man named Squanto who had survived slavery in England and knew their language. He taught them to grow corn and to fish, and negotiated a peace treaty between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Nation. At the end of their first year, the Pilgrims held a great feast honoring Squanto and the Wampanoags.

Calming and Healing Children Naturally

My 4-year-old son has been a little angry. Yesterday we went to the beach. I allowed the waters to calm his spirit. I allowed the sun to charge and heal him. Time in nature creates a space for balanced emotions. He looked so renewed at the beach. He told me, "Yemaya hit me with a wave, that was the coolest part".
Yemaya is a Yoruba deity that rules the top layer of the ocean. She protects and nourishes all, especially women and children. She washes away hurt and misery.

A healthy functioning liver also can ease anger issues. Adults can do more intense liver cleanses. I would not recommend this for a child. However, you can add liver healing and detoxing foods to your child's daily diet. Foods that clean the liver and keep it functioning healthy are:

Apples, Beets, Garlic, Onions, Broccoli,
Brussel sprouts, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Prunes
Raisons, Berries, Plums, Oranges, Pink grapefruit
Cantaloupe, Pears, Artichoke,
Bitter leafy salad greens (dandelion, chicory, endive, rocket).

Important!! We MUST be mindful of what pictures we put online

As I watched this I think I was just as alarmed as the mother:

My Beautiful Single Mamas

Greetings!

I have been connecting with mothers all over the world, especially my single parenting sisters.

I have decided to do this, because I know that single parenting does not mean ONLY parenting. We are not alone! The universe has been assisting us and we are a part of a much larger family.

Rising above the baby daddy & mama drama is necessary for our community to prosper and move forward.

I send you all much love and power!

Buying A False Sense of Security

Most people choose not to vaccinate their children because of dangers or religious reasons. My son visited a pediatrician for the first time in 3 ½ years since he was 4 weeks old. The doctor asked me why I chose to refuse vaccines. I explained to her my reasons, mainly health related. However, as I left the office I also thought about the ethical reasons. As an “American citizen” I take for granted the fact that many of our children are not used as vaccine trial subjects. Pharmaceutical companies make billions of dollars off of vaccines. But, many poorer children without a voice have suffered and died in order for wealthier children to have vaccines and the rich to get richer.

Background

She writes to make it right

o, this one has taken to expressing her thoughts through written word, which could not put a bigger smile on my face! Whatever goes on in her little head is expressed through random notes that appear in places such as on my keyboard, my pillow, Kris' desk, or the kitchen counter. Yesterday, she got in trouble for telling me she'd completed a book I'd assigned her, only because she wanted the reward I had promised. I rambled on about the importance of telling the truth and sent her to her room. A few moments later, here's what appeared on my desk:

The vital role of expectant fathers and unborn children

Once the child is conceived parents must begin nurturing the child while in the womb. Mother and father need to send the child loving and healing light daily. Parents must be conscious of the energy being sent. They should send only the divine and positive. The child is encapsulated in water. Water carries emotions. The baby can receive both positive and negative energy. Whether the mother is feeling joy, anger, or sadness the unborn child will feel it too. She has the ability to hear around 4 1/2 months. This is when the ear becomes functional. Iyas (mamas) sing Afrikan cultural songs to your babies and read to them in the womb. Babas (fathers) the child can hear your voice too. While, there is some evidence that the child hears the father’s voice and that his voice has a calming affect on the newborn, the link between the child's ear and the father's voice is not even remotely as direct as the mother's voice. So, the greatest contribution that the expectant father can make is to love his child's mother.

Creating My Own Conscious Child

I want to start this entry off by stating that while being a mother is one of the greatest joys of my life, it has also become one of the most challenging aspects. I am a mother of two beautiful goddesses. My eldest is recently turned 9 years old and my baby will be 8 months on the 19th of this month. Although getting used to having a little one again has been tough, I have found that my biggest challenge right now is my 9 year old. Let me just get straight to it:

Because I am a Socially, Spiritually, and Culturally Conscious woman and mother, I try my very best to raise my girls to be the same. Now, I realize that each person is an individual- no two people are exactly alike, no matter how hard one may try to mold another. While I have to battle external forces at my daughters public school, the radio, television, books, movies, etc...(the list goes on and on) I find myself in a constant battle with her father. Note: my daughters both have different fathers***

How do you teach your children about our Heritage ?

The title is the reason for my post . i know we are to celebrate the greatness of our heritage 365, and till the day we move one to rest with the most high. But how exactly are we/you teaching our children. And is the culture of hip-hop included in it ?

Do you start with your family tree? or Do you start with the kings and queens?

Just a question my sisters in light of the month
