It's common to walk in your grocery or produce store and find signs announcing that the fruit before you is organic: "Organic Peaches - $3.99lb", but we will NEVER see a sign that confesses that the fruit you're about to purchase is genetically modified. Could you image a sign that reads "Genetically modified peaches - $1.99lb"?

While it may not be spelled out for us, those little numbers, on those little annoying stickers on our fruit communicates more than a PLU for the cashier. Those numbers also communicates whether you're purchasing organic, conventional or genetically engineered/modified fruit.

Add this to you the bottom of your grocery list until you memorize - your life depends on it!

Conventional Fruit Labels
Four digits and does not start with 9
** mostly starting with the digit 4
EXAMPLE: A conventionally grown banana would be: 4011

Organic Fruit Labels
Five digits and starts with number 9
EXAMPLE: An organic banana would be: 94011

Genetically Modified Fruits
Start with the digit 8
EXAMPLE: A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be: 84011
