Clutch Magazine: Dede Sutton

From fashion to beauty to life, Editor-in-Chief of CLUTCH Magazine DeDe Sutton and her crew are serving up some fabulous and stylish inspiration. CLUTCH is an online magazine that comes out with fresh new issues every month. They have featured quite a lovely palette of inspirational women like Erykah Badu, Tia Mowry, Nia Long, Fashion Designers, Writers, Musicians, and the list goes on and on; & in case you didn't know they also featured the YMIB Circle back in January. Keep a lookout because she will be launching a fashion site for women of color called "Brown Fashionistas", a portal that she promises will fill the void of fashion inspiration for us! DeDe took some time out to share with us the details of what inspired her to start CLUTCH, what she hopes to see from our women, and of course we couldn't let her go without sharing lots of her favorite fashion and beauty must haves!

ymib: Fashion / Beauty / Lifestyle Magazines & Books that are a must have resource that inspire you?

Dede: Magazines/Sites: Essence, Suede, Vibe Vixen, Lucky, Fader, Trace, Complex, Okayplayer, Scheme and Elle. Books: "The Covenant" by Tavis Smiley and "The Power of Now" - Eckart Tolle.

ymib: Why is it important for you to keep doing what you do, and what effect would you like to see "Clutch" have on its readers & how would you like to see it grow?

Dede: I think it's important because Clutch brings a balance and fills a void in magazines for Black women. I started Clutch initially for me and my girls to have something to read that accurately reflected us as fashionable, confident, empowered, intelligent and beautiful women. My main purpose with Clutch is to inform and empower. So, if someone reads Clutch and is informed about an issue/topic they are empowered and hopefully they are empowered enough to help make a change. Also, to redefine our image and show Black women in their correct light. On Growth: Actually, we have a couple of new sites in the works for 2008-2009. It's a surprise, but I promise it fills yet another void for African Americans and the Black Fashion Industry.

ymib: What do you feel is the current state of acceptance of African-American womens natural beauty within todays society & amongst our women, and would you like to see anything change?

Dede: I feel that African American/Black women are going through a natural and self-acceptance revolution. We no longer care what others think of us and we do what makes us happy. We know we don't have to conform to a certain standard of beauty and I think that's beautiful. Is there anything I would change...I would say to stop tearing each other down. Let's reverse it and help build each other up.

ymib: Key essentials that you try to keep in your closet & clutch?

Dede: I am 5'1 so I have a massive pump/stiletto collection. Also, I am starting to get a sneaker obsession - so I have some new fly kicks. As for my wardrobe, you will find lots of classic pieces like A-line skirts, cardigans, vintage blouses, blazers, and lots of jeans. In my Clutch - Altoids, Lipglass, Softlips, Dr. Scholl's Sole Inserts, Elasta QP Power Drops, foundation and my Daddy's picture.

ymib: Something new you would like to learn?

Dede: I would have to say learn how to cook! I can't cook - I know ....sad! My Mom used to be a chef and I can't even fry chicken. So, I plan on hopping in a cooking class or start experimenting with some recipes soon. But, I must add that I can bake. I can bake my butt off.

ymib: If your life had a theme song, what would would it be & why?

Dede: "Spaceship" by Kanye West. When I first heard that song I felt like Kanye wrote it for me. So, many situations he talks about in the song I either went through or am going through now.

ymib: Where/how do you find creative inspiration?

Dede: I live online and with that being said I get lots of inspiration from other sites. I am constantly looking at websites and blogs and not just fashion and beauty sites. I frequent design, home decor, technology and art websites. I am a magazine junkie and I spend most of my weekends at Barnes and Noble looking through U.S and international magazines and reading. Also, I find creative inspiration in cd covers, videos, old vinyl albums and family photo albums.
