When your father is considered to be a musical legend all around the world, and your mother is a charismatic songstress, and you grow up with strong cultured roots, you cannot help but to be full of personality, creativity, and culture. Cedella Marley, the daughter of Bob & Rita Marley is one of our favorite ladies not just because she poured out some funky vintage inspired clothing with her line Catch A Fire, which we hope to see more of, but she is a lady that goes for her dreams and offers up some great inspiration for any creative spirit.
ymib: 3 marketing tips that you would give to an aspiring fashion designer:
Cedella:
Know who you are selling to and know why would someone buy your t-shirt versus another designer.
Make something unique: sometimes first impression last forever so think in terms of long term results.
Don’t isolate anyone; I did that for a while making clothes only to fit my size. I got a lot of “ well, your mamma’s big”
ymib: What are the top challenges of putting on a fashion show and what are some key points to producing a great collection presentation/fashion show?
Cedella: I am very hands on. I have only done a few. Usually I would just send my collection with my “people” and just hope that it goes well. I actually participated “physically” for the second time at Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica. I spent 3 nights just mixing my music. It’s good to have brothers who are musicians. Damien helped me out a bit. He did a little “Catch a Fire” intro for me. I pick the models and just showed them how I want them to walk. I am a natural screw face so I wanted the girls to look “not tuff” but sexy and rough at the same time. The collection is fun all the time. I have to stop myself, as they might want to show 15 pieces and I made 30 pieces so it gets hard to pick what you think will make the show.

ymib: What is the creative design process, when coming up with your collections and what parts do you enjoy the most?
Cedella: I put myself in a place where I look forward but draw from the past. I am always militant but not in an “in your face” way. Travel to Ethiopia….some beautiful silks, prints, coins, crosses. It’s all about where I’m at and how I feel.
Her mission in life: “I don’t know what my mission is. It chances everyday. At first I was going to be a great business woman, no children, build an empire and try to feed the world. I now have 3 boys and a husband. Still operate as CEO of the family companies. Tried to feed kids in Africa but the food is probably still sitting at the ports over there…politics. Things change, sometimes your mission is not the mission intended for you. Everything in life has a purpose find its reason in every season.”

Cedella On Beauty: I’ll get some Jamaican carbolic soap sometimes and just wash from head to toe. It smells horrible but that’s what I grew up with. Cornmeal is a good exfoliant, and when I was younger sand from the beach was a great scrub and still is. I drink tons of spirulina, beet and carrot juice, and I probably consume more oranges than I should.
Advice she has learned about life from her mother:
Trust your instincts, not people.
Be forgiving, because one day you will ask for forgiveness.
Fight for love unconditionally but not stupidly.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Don’t be so hard on yourself, you are loved.
Something most people don't know about her: “I’m a great cook and a homebody”
We patiently wait to see more fabulous pieces from Cedella. The Catch a Fire website is currently down, but in the mean time you can still grab a few of her “Marley” inspired pieces here and here.

very insightful and inspiring! I just returned from Jamaica and had the honor of visiting the birth and final resting place of Bob Marley. It was not an easy ride up that mountain but once I got there it was worth it. A beautiful soul like her parents. Thank you for a nother great read.
