Pots With Style!

1. If you are adding the hemp string to the top of your pot, then you will need to take your scissors and poke holes through the top every 1/2 inch or so. Make sure all of your holes are big enough for your string to fit through.

2. Paint the trim of your pot with your choice of acrylic paint. This is when you want to have hairdryer handy, as it will mke this step go a lot quicker, otherwise you will have to sit and wait in between coats!

I used a turquoise here. You want to be sure to paint about an 1" of the inside as well (No need to paint further down, as your potting soil will take car of covering that). This step will require several coats to achieve a rich even look. Make sure not to paint over your holes, or else you will end up having to go back and "open" the holes with your scissors, and you don't want to do that, at the risk of ruining your paint job! ( you can paint the bottom of your pot, however, it is not necessary).

3. You want to now clip out your images, letters, and words from your magazines / newspapers, etc. Get creative and clip up something unique. You will want to make sure that your clippings are not too large as they may buckle when you try to glue them down to your pot.

4. Once you have come up with your composition, you are ready for gluing them to your pot. This is a tricky part, you want to make sure that you work from one end of the clipping to the other when adhering it to the pot, and GENTLY press down. You want to avoid any air bubble. Your images should lay flat and smooth for a nice crisp look. This is also when you wil want to add any embellishments with your pens, such as poetry, words, drawings.

5. String your hemp through your holes by making a secure knot at one end. Leave about 1/4 of an inch tail. Pull your string through your fist hole, making sure the knot and tail is hidden underneath the rim of the pot. Continue stringing. Once you reach the last hole, you will connect your remaining string to the first one(with the knot) and tie them together to form a secure knot.

6. Time for the Gloss! Take your clear drying modge podge glue/varnish and paint over your images, covering the entire outside of your pot, including the outside and inside of the rim. Again be sure not to cover your holes! Let dry. Do not use your hairdryer to dry...it will create unwanted ai bubbles!!!

7. Plant those plants!
