Before you go any further, you must remember that your creativity can never be lost, it can never be forgotten, all you have to do is call upon it, daily, consistently, and it will appear. Creativity is not something you can find, it is something that you are born with...it is forever with you..you just don't realize it!
I think it is safe to say that we as creative women can sometimes find ourselves in a place that is filled with confusion, low energy, lack of motivation, lack of inspiration, and a place that seems to want to block all of our passages to get our visual ideas from it's mental state into reality.
So many of us want to be creative weekly, if not daily, yet we find ourselves distracted by the mundane responsibilities of life that at many times can take any ounce of energy that we may have left...especially for those of us who are stay at home moms/work from home. Having a block of creative time is essential for any woman, but extremely important for the woman who craves a creative lifestyle.
Creativity is like a muscle and in order to keep it strong, you must flex it often or else it will turn into a mushy blob and become filled with unhealthy creative blocks. If you feel that you have not exercised your creativity in quite some time, yet you have the urge to create, then you may find the following tips to be of help.
1. Surround Yourself With Creative Beings: it is super important to keep a creative entourage around you at all times. Whether it is a close group of friends who are super duper talented when it comes to creativity or it may be living in a creative inspired town that celebrates the arts. Either way your creative body needs trainers, just like your physical body, and that trainer is the creative company you keep!
2. Read Creative Blogs, But Don't Overdose: The funny thing is while you do need to keep your creativity fed by the inspiration of others, it is also important not to overload on THEIR creativity. This is because you may find yourself comparing and or subconsciously creating similar things. This is especially relative to blog hopping as I call it. Try to keep your daily intake..aka your creative medicine to a limit, just as you would any other prescribed medicine....too much of a good thing can be bad!
3. Don't Sweat The Big Stuff...Start Off Small: When you have been away from the creative world for a while, you may find yourself wanting to create these extravagant pieces yet when you go to do so, you just don't have the time, leaving you feeling discouraged and unsuccessful. So I suggest that you start off with small crafts, small paintings, small quilts, and smaller pieces of jewelry for example. Take your time, get back into the process of things and work your way up!
4. Organization Will Set You Free: Whether you have a fabtastic craft room/studio or a little nook in the corner of the family room, it is essential for your creative spirit to have a place to come to daily to create. Keep your tools at hand, your sewing machine plugged in and threaded, and a clean workspace that is ready to be used at any time. If you can manage to do this, you will be inspired to create more often. But remember..clean up when you are done or else the next time you look at your space you will run the other way!
5. Tisk Tisk...Keep A List: Keeping a running list of projects that you would like to create is wonderful inspiration and will keep the juices flowing on what your creative energy may want to create next. I personally have a “Project Wish List” in which I simply jot down projects that I would like to make and when I am in a creative mood, I will choose from the list something that I am amped to create.
These are just a few tips to get you going on the right track. Keeping your creative energy strong takes motivation, inspiration, dedication, patience, and passion. You may not create the perfect item right now, but in due time you will be a busy little creative bee buzzing away!
#1 is so true. environment
#1 is so true. environment is crucial because we (creative, beautiful, black earthlings) don't work in segregated compartments. everything works together, feeds off of each other and everything is connected to the joining glue. i'm disconnected right now but I know this is temporary and as soon as I get some space to live and regain the ability to control my environment, the words will find their way back to the paper.
