This morning, I decided i wanted to look into fabric design, screenprinting, etc. I ended up on a site, that was filled with lots of info. There, I came across a link to the "South African Designers Guide."
I was so excited to see what this offered, as i know that the South African region has a looong history of rich, vibrant and intricate design.
What i found surprised me! Not only were there no bold, colorful, intricate designs, but NONE of the featured designers were Black. Not one! Now i know that S.A. is a very mixed country, but MOST of the people there are Black, so their exclusion was a bit suspect.
I mean, over the years I’ve seen some absolutely fabulous art and design that has come from South Africa. Some of it was "revolutionary art" that was in direct response to that countries racist history. Some was the celebration of the spirit that permeates oppressed people.
So how, in this guide, was none of that included?
And the comments!!! While there were many people who asked the same question that i am, there were some, that were downright disturbing!
Historical Amnesia!
How is it possible, to live in a country with the oppressive history that South African has, and say "there is no color here, we are all South African. It's just about the design"
And how is it possible to have a book entitled “The South African Designers Guide” without the designers who are descended from people who have struggled and died for their freedom.
See for yourself: http://www.designspongeonline.com/2007/12/south-african-designers-guide....
And take a look at a site that is run by a Black South African women: http://www.stonedcherrie.co.za/gallery.html
PS. This all just made me love YMIB more, keep up the work that you are doing.
Yes there are black S.A designers!
I finally felt compelled to join after reading and realizing i needed to be a member to respond. I am from Southern Africa....Botswana to be specific and I just wanted to relay to you that there are tons of black designers back home.

Oooh! I love all things
Oooh! I love all things textile! I am actually working on something for both ymib & JuBella ( http://jubella.com ) which will highlight screen printing and block printing. I have a bit of experience as I went to SCAD for Fibers & Textiles for a couple of years. however, I want to expand my horizons, as it has been some time since I have picked up the old speedball, and I plan on opening a couple of etsy shops that will include hand blocked.printed.painted fabrics. You should think about pre-ordering this book by Lena Corwin, I plan on ordering it as well, as I am a big fan of her work: http://tinyurl.com/5znd98. I will work on an inspirational creative bite for ya until I get the DIY article up!
Yeah, I can feel your frustration about that post, but I do think it is most important that when we see people of color not being represented that we take it upon ourselves to fix our concerns on our own, and not ask anyone else to do it, it is more of our responsibility to do it. I say this because if the script was flipped, would we really want someone of non-color coming onto a site that focuses on people of color(and the demographics Being of color) saying that they feel that "white people" or any other race are not being represented anywhere. I guess the best response to that post on designsponge would have been for someone to have put their own list together that features the designers "of color" that they like. I think we should be careful on how much we complain to people outside of our race for not representing us, because I wouldn't want the same actions put upon me, especially as an Editor & Design Blogger myself. But like I said, i totally see your point!
...Stoned Cherrie is FABULOUS...here is a write up on them that you will like too: http://www.ymib.com/daily-inspiration/fashion-beauty/articles/fashion-sp...
keep us posted on your research, and whenever I come across something, I will most definitely forward/post it for you!

Screenprinting today, very excited!
Yes, that is actually i found the Stoned Cherrie site, from what someone posted in response to the book. I agree with you about fixing the problems ourselves, however i think the issue had more to do with the Book being able to claim it self as THE S.A. guide...rather than with the blog site. (actually the blog moderator was very good at trying to get an understanding about the exclusion)
For me, it was just more an example of the "vulture mentality" but it really reinforced why "I" need to be doing more and how "time waits for no one."
Thus my screenprinting journey... I've found some really great supplies, fabric paints, screens, flash dryer, etc. off of craigslist and today i'm attempting to burn in my first image. (yeaah!)
I will look into that book again, i also found some good stuff at http://www.dharmatrading.com/clothing
I can't wait for the inspiration article and "how to" and again thank you soo much for this site, i just love it!!!
Peace and Blessings,
