Breakfast Ideas

**********I am trying real hard again to stay away from sugar and gluten. Kelly has some great resouces on her site about different low GI sweeteners. I haven't tried any of her recipes yet but so far I really like ingredients.

Make your own fresh fruit and herb Vinegars

******** Leslie Cerier is a great teacher and author and I was thrilled to watch her latest video, which was shot in her beautiful country kitchen and gardens. I hope to have a garden like that someday.

Maxwell Black Summers' Night Tour

I must say that I really enjoyed myself at the Maxwell concert in Madison Square Garden, NYC last night. This is the first time seeing him in concert. I think he was excellent. Great dancing and nice video, effects and lighting. I felt like he really worked the crowd. He gave a lot of shout outs to Brooklyn his home town and seemed humbled by the experience of performing in the garden. There's plenty of great things ahead for Maxwell.
This is my favorite song on his new album!

Banana Fritters

Handmade Teapots

Today is one of my studio days so I'll be there finishing up on those teapots in pic and starting some new ones. Making teapots are a long process because each part is thrown on the potter's wheel separately then put together. I also have to make sure that the handle and spout are at the right angle so that the teapot pours well. I've been sketching some new teapot shapes I have in mind but because of the weather I feel like today might just be a great day to make bowls. We will see!

Mango Lime

**********The flavors of mango and lime work so perfectly together. I wanted to share this sweet simple and refreshing dessert or snack.
Tossed 2 diced mangos in a bowl with zest of about 1 or 2 limes (save some to garnish). Let sit in the frig. a couple of hours to let flavors develop or eat right away. Taste great alone or serve it like I did mine topped with plain yogurt with no sugar added, it gives the dish a nice balance of sweet and pungent then and garnish with more lime zest. Enjoy!

Mom's Mac and Cheese

********I really shouldn't eat cheese but I just can't help myself!. I have issues with dairy and I have a love hate relationship with cheese, mainly I love it :-) all types!.
With that said, I went to spend time at my moms house for labor day and she made my favorite southern style baked mac and cheese. Even though my mom is not southern she cooks a mean mac and cheese. I have child hood memories of saving it for last on my plate. Any school event I would ask my mom to make it, because it will be a sure hit! My sis makes a good mac and cheese too! I don't think I could ever give it up.

Artisan Sea Salts

*************So this is my collection of sea salts***********

Smoked Sea Salt

french fries with smoked sea salt

*****I love natural smoked sea salt. It adds a great smoked flavor to veggies. I use it mainly when cooking leafy greens like collards, kale and swiss chard. It taste great with grilled zucchini and string beans too! There are different types on the market I'm using the alder wood smoked sea salt here.
This is the first time I use smoked sea salt on french fries. It was a happy accident. In my hungry state I grabbed the wrong container. Turns out to be very good. :-)
A former ceramic studio mate introduced my to the world of culinary salts. Including course black sea salt which is also one of my must haves. I try not to consume too much salt in my diet, but with sea salt a little goes along way. It's worth a try.

A good Ceramic Pot

Shevon Gant Ceramics

I just Wanted to take time out to show the interior of a wheel thrown ceramic vase I was making. It wasn’t the correct shape I wanted. I made a bunch and cut them all up. This is a good study because it shows if a handmade ceramic piece is well made. A well made piece should have even wall thickness and feel light weight. A thinly thrown piece can be beautiful but lack some durability Vs. a thickly thrown piece will be to heavy and uncomfortable to use. Balance is the Key to Life in everything including pottery!

Natural Food Bars

Mrs. May natural food barYum, This Natural food bar is my current favorite. I just got a lovely box, I will try to make this one last for the whole month. The bars are 100% natural from Mrs. May. I love that it has big pieces of fruit & nut. I was a big fan of Raw Revolution and Greens + Energy bars, well actually I still like those, but it time to switch up. Bars are great! I’m always running around, traveling to work and the ceramic studio. I like bringing my own food with me it’s cheaper and healthier.
I would love to hear what's your favorite Bar?

Sugar-free apple almond cake

My new health goal and culinary challenge is to reduce my sugar consumption. This has been very hard for me because I love eating and creating desserts.
I'm not going to try to cut sugar out all together but I want too gradually try to reduce. (I'm no fool).
In the past I've been baking with a mix maple sugar and syrup which works really well and I also use sucanat and evaporated cane juice which is just a touch better than white refined stuff.
I'm using pure apple juice as a sweetener in this cake and a little agave syrup and apple juice in the topping. I just wanted to post some pictures to keep myself and I hope others inspired.

Kitchen Cupboard Makeover

shevon gant ceramics

I thought it's time to give my kitchen cupboard a makeover. Getting rid of all those old plastic containers.... at least most of them. I'm making this change mainly due to health concerns of storing food in plastic. I have some plastic storage containers that are still like new ( I'll just use them for a non- food purpose). This has been on my to do list for some time, so I thought if I shared this experience for sure I'll get it done.

Glass, Ceramic ( which I have plenty of) and stainless steel are best for storing food. I use a lot of my ceramic bowls for storage already, but I recently ordered some glass air tight containers from QVC which I love. One of the features are that they don't break, ( at least not very easily) The QVC host dropped it from a distance and it was still fine. I 'm not going to do that, but here are my results
